A network of excellence for distributed, trustworthy, efficient and scalable AI at the Edge (dAIEDGE)

Partner

The proposal focuses on the Next Generation AI topic of the call HORIZON-CL4-2022-HUMAN-02-02. The vision of dAIEDGE Network of Excellence (NoE) is to strengthen and support the development of the dynamic European edge and distributed Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem as an essential ingredient in the growth and competitiveness of European industrial sectors. The dAIEDGE Network aims to reinforce the research and innovation value chains to accelerate the digital and green transitions through advanced edge AI technologies, applications, and innovations, building on Europe's existing assets and industrial strengths. In parallel, it will fortify the edge AI research and industrial communities through technological developments beyond state of the art and become a dependable and strategic pillar for the European AI Lighthouse. This will be achieved by mobilising and connecting the European AI and edge AI constituency, the relevant stakeholders, European partnerships, and projects, to provide roadmaps, guidelines and trends supporting the next-generation edge AI technologies. The key aim is to support and ensure rapid development, market uptake and open strategic sovereignty for Europe in the critical technologies for distributed edge AI (hardware, software, frameworks, tools). The dAIEDGE NoE will play a catalyst role in building a solid edge AI virtual network of research facilities and laboratories to benefit the European research and industrial community. The NoE multidisciplinary concept provide an arena for matchmaking, exchanging ideas, tools, and services, by bringing together the leading research centres, AI-on-demand platforms, digital innovation hubs, AI projects and initiatives. The ultimate goal for the dAIEDGE NoE is to support Europe to become a global centre of excellence with unique human-centred edge AI competence addressing the social and economic challenges and the needs of the citizens and society.

SpAce-AIr-Ground Last Mile InfRastructure & Dynamic PrOgrAmmable DistRibuted EnvIronment For Edge FArmiNg (AGRARIAN)

Partner

AGRARIAN will focus on the design of an open and highly dynamic environment (TRL 5-7) with respect to the tools, reuse, composability and orchestration so as to enable tailored open-source digital solutions that will enhance sustainability performance and competitiveness of the agricultural sector. AGRARIAN will leverage mature and sophisticated technologies addressing the requirements of different workloads through a new programming environment and tools for the automated refactoring of existing and/or new applications and data management frameworks enabling them to operate in edge-based deployments as well as new edge-native programming abstractions and middleware. Based on widely accepted open source technologies and adoption of container-based technologies and orchestrators, AGRARIAN platform aims to offer: Smart connectivity for secure access to any of the relevant network infrastructure options; Ability to dynamically meet latency, configuration and other requirements of each of the different network technologies; Integration of edge and cloud for a transparent infrastructure to organize and deploy software components on demand; Uniform management of distributed digital infrastructure for different edge types, cloud components and services; Dynamic deployment and provisioning of services and applications that are time- and location-dependent; Management of data to maintain data security and optimize data processing; Optimisation of operations in terms of energy consumption by enabling new tools and apps for field operations and resource use; The proposed AGRARIAN environment will enable the development of new tools and apps for the agriculture by improving operational effectiveness and efficiency through real- time data processing. A strong ADSS (Agricultural Decision Support System) tool will be developed taking into consideration all specificities of farmers in rural communities enabling end users and stakeholders and maximize their benefit.

MUTI-MISSION EFFICIENT AND SECURE HIGH CAPACITY END-TO-END EO (MESEO)

Partner

MESEO aims to design, prototype and demonstrate an open, flexible and scalable multi-mission EO End-to-End system for massive processing. It will improve performance bottlenecks either on board or on ground while ensuring Space data sovereignty. The main goal of the proposed approach is to improve quality of service and timeline reactivity by improving the End-to-End EO chain at different levels and processing edges while reducing communication bandwidth and incorporating new technology optimised in power consumption and processing capabilities. MESEO will promote a collaborative digital ecosystem enabled by an EO Coordinator Centre together with distributed and heterogeneous Processing Functions. Those Functions will be exported through harmonized interfaces which will ensure the data sovereignty. EO ecosystem players will register their products/services as exported Functions into the ecosystem. The EO Coordinator Centre will control which registered Processing Function to activate in a transparent manner for optimal End-to-End performance, from either timing or quality point of view, for a given End-User request. MESEO specifically addressed both upstream and downstream parts of the EO data processing value chain in a transparent manner. Performance enhancements analysis will tackle major bottlenecks on each link of the EO data processing running either on board or on ground. MESEO proposed innovations will address such bottlenecks. Green Deal related pilot applications (methane monitoring and crops classification) will serve to demonstrate the performance enhancements due to the proposed innovations.

JANUS (Joint Architecture for Novel, Universal satAPPs): The gateway to SynApps - cognitive, resilient, and autonomous In-Space services (JANUS)

Partner

JANUS (Joint Architecture for Novel, Universal satAPPs) develops the satAPPs component for the EU ISOS pilot mission, enabling Europe’s strategic capacity to Act in Space by 2030. It delivers a portfolio of modular, plug-and-play satellite applications (SynApps) aligned with ISOS Universal Service Interfaces (USIs) and AppStore principles, creating the foundation for a sustainable, circular and sovereign in-space economy. The JANUS SynApps portfolio comprises: CogniAPP, a cognitive HPC/edge computing satAPP that “uberises” space computing through dynamic workload placement across onboard and ground assets; ResiAPP, a resilient data exchange satAPP embedding zero-trust networking, graceful degradation, and quantum-resistant cryptography; OrchestrAPP-Core, an autonomy and task orchestration satAPP enabling policy-aware, explainable decision-making; and OrchestrAPP-HDI, a distributed hybrid cognitive infrastructure satAPP supporting cooperative cognition and scalable resource sharing. Together, they transform satellites into autonomous service nodes capable of re-use, reconfiguration, and multi-purpose operations, directly contributing to EU non-dependence, resilience, and competitiveness. JANUS advances each SynApp from TRL 3–4 to TRL 6 via iterative prototyping and validation in a hardware-in-the-loop ground demonstrator, integrating avionics, OBC/HPC, comms emulators, and USI interfaces. Demonstrator scenarios include maritime situational awareness, rapid EO response, and ISR—showcasing compression of the intelligence cycle from days to minutes and validating interoperability with the broader ISOS ecosystem. One or more SynApps will also be prepared for IOD/IOV via the HOST component, ensuring continuity towards deployment. The project is delivered by a consortium uniting expertise in EO services, HPC/OBC hardware, cybersecurity, autonomy, ISOS interfaces, and system integration.

Relaxed Semantics Across the Data Analytics Stack (RELAX)

associatedpartner

The RELAX European Doctoral Network aims to train a cohort of highly mobile and adaptable researchers to become experts in the design of scalable and efficient data-intensive software systems. These experts will master the specific skill of navigating the semantics or correctness conditions of applications, with the goal of enhancing scalability, response times, and availability. Working across the disciplinary specialisms of data science, data management, distributed computing and computing systems, the Fellows will develop knowledge of the broad issues underpinning data analytics systems. The bespoke training programme fosters intellectual enquiry and combines technical and scientific research training with courses in innovation, management and leadership. The training network addresses a critical skills gap in data analytics expertise, which needs urgently addressed to support innovation and employment in a fast-growing European data economy. The 14 partner organisations representing 8 countries will benefit first-hand through intersectoral collaboration and an Open Innovation model.
